Description: Bottom fishing or shipwreck fishing for Gag Grouper is a day of fun that won't soon be forgotten. Gag Grouper are brownish gray in color with dark worm-like markings on sides; strong serrated spur at bottom margin of preopercle, less noticeable in large specimens; fins dark, with anal and caudal having white margin. Often confused with black grouper; tail of gag is slightly concave, black is square; gag has white margin on anal and caudal fins, black does not; under 10 pounds, gag's spur on preopercle is distinctive, where black is gently rounded. Food Value: Excellent; firm white flesh with little red. Where found: Gag Grouper are found throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Adults OFFSHORE over shipwrecks, rocks and reefs; juveniles occur in seagrass beds INSHORE. During the winter months big Gag Grouper move INSHORE to warmer water. Size: Common to 25 pounds. Florida Gag Grouper Record: 71 lbs., 3 ozs. Gag Grouper Fishing Techniques: Trolling, Drifting and Still Fishing. Remarks: Gag Grouper spawn January through March; Feeds on fish and squid.
